Memorial Suadiye Medical Center; Child Health and Diseases Specialist Murat Yildirim, "The importance of sleep in children," gave information about.
Sleep and Grow
Sleep is not only a means of rest. Sleep is essential for regeneration of all organs, especially the brain. Stress hormones decrease and growth hormone secretion increases during sleep. In this way, the body repairs itself during sleep, reconstructs, increases protein synthesis and the body prepares itself for the new day.
Regular Sleep Boosts Memory
Sleep time is the respite that carers look forward to; has a much greater importance for children. The child grows during sleep. The smaller the child, the faster the growth, the greater the need for sleep. Growth will be faster in a child who sleeps regularly. Again, it was revealed that learning is more clear and memory is stronger in these children. In the case of inadequate sleep, the situation is the opposite. Obesity was found to be more frequent in children who could not sleep enough. These children are more likely to eat junk food, drink more calorie drinks, and spend time in front of the television or computer.
Regular Sleep Reduces Hyperactivity and Risk of Depression
Scientific research has shown that regular sleep in preschool children reduces hyperactivity, anxiety and depression. It has also been shown that in a week period, 3-4 days and more sleep (which means at least 11-12 hours sleep per day) is necessary for children. In adolescence, sleep time usually hangs after midnight, and the child begins to settle with little sleep. Depression tendency was found to be higher in children who sleep for 7-7.5 hours per day.
It has been shown that the frequency of depression in these children is 42% higher than children who enter bed before 22.00 at night. While the ideal sleep time is 9 hours during adolescence, many children are content with sleeping 7-7.5 hours.
Set Your Child's Bedtime to 22.00
It should be ensured that the time to go to sleep during the entire childhood is before 10pm. Ensuring this may not always be easy. Establishing a healthy sleep habit should be initiated from early infancy.
Let your child fall asleep on his own
Conditional reflexes will occur if the child is accustomed to falling asleep by contact, breast, feeding or rocking. Each time he wakes up, he will ask for the existence of these conditions, which become compulsory for sleeping. So sleepless nights will start for the mother or caregiver. For this reason, in terms of sleeping habits developed during infancy, the children of the family and their own interests should establish the habit of falling asleep independently. Children usually have separation anxiety. When children wake up at night, they need more time to comprehend the distinction between reality and dream.
Eating Habits Affect Sleep Pattern
There are also some nutritional factors on sleep. A drop in blood sugar in the middle of the night will wake you up. In this respect, carbohydrate-rich foods (bakery and sugary) should be avoided close to sleep time. Food allergies will also cause itching, asthma and digestive problems and impair sleep quality. Removal of cow's milk from the diet in children with cow's milk allergy improves sleep quality. In addition, food allergies will cause tonsil and nasal flesh growth in children and cause sleep problems. Low intake of calcium, magnesium and B vitamins (especially B6) increases their awakening at night. Caffeinated foods taken before bedtime (abundant in many beverages and chocolates) can cause insomnia due to its stimulating effect.
Relax your child with fairy tales and massages for regular sleep
A regular sleep time, pre-sleep fairy tale and relaxing music, providing opportunities for bodily activity during the day, presenting a list of attractive activities and surprises awaiting her when awakening, leaving the child alone with a trust object (a blanket or toy she will love), almond oil, Massage with chamomile or lavender oil can make sleep cute for the child.
Creating a climate of peace, not war between the family and the child, about the time to go to sleep will perhaps solve the problems.
